Luang Prabang

Nestled in a dramatic river valley, Luang Prabang is an kaleidoscopic of unforgettable details. Delicate, arching temple roofs are hidden behind old colonial style buildings. Hill-tribe villagers hawk their colourful textiles in the Sunday market. The Mekong and Nam Khan rivers wind slowly through the town, creating a feeling of both tranquillity and majesty. Upon arrival, visitors find themselves immersed in a leisurely way of life that has remained essentially unchanged by modernity. It is this unique atmosphere that draws visitors back again and again.Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well preserved architecture, the town has far more to offer, from the hospitality and warmth of its people to the beauty of the surrounding countryside.

Activities: The city itself is the starting point for a variety of excursions. Most popular is the boat trip down river to the Pak Our caves.reached by steps leading from the river into a steep cliff, these caves contain a multitude of Buddha images.or nature lovers, there are biking, rafting and canoeing tours, as well as elephant treks to Tad Se Waterfall. Also within day-trip distance is Kuangsi Waterfalls, one of the region's most beautiful waterfalls, with opportunities for swimming in its multi-tiered pools.

Getting There: Luang Prabang is served by frequent flights from Vientiane, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Saigon, Hanoi, Siem Reap, Phnom Penh and Kunming, making it easy to combine with other Mekong region destinations. It may also be reached overland from Vientiane, via Vang Vieng. Accommodation: Every type of accommodation is available in Luang Prabang, many places with their own particular charm. Among our favorites are Villa Santi Hotel, the colonial-style former residence of a Lao princess, located directly in town. The surrounding countryside contains many world class resort-style retreats, such as the Pansea Phou Vao, the Grand and the Villa Santi Resort.
